The announcement from Scodix regarding the successful completion of its recyclability tests
highlights the company's dedication to sustainability within the graphic arts industry. The
results of these tests indicate that Scodix embellishments can be effectively repulped during
the recycling process.
This means that products that incorporate Scodix embellishments can now bear the
recyclable symbol, aligning with the company's commitment to environmentally friendly
practices.
Scodix EVP Global Sales & Marketing, Mark Nixon, comments, “Sustainability is a core pillar
of our business operations. As such, we are thrilled to share our latest test results which
underscore the positive impact Scodix products can have on building a more sustainable
future. With our repulpability and recyclability certification coupled with our Life Cycle
Assessment (LCA) findings, Scodix users can confidently embrace data-driven sustainability
practices.
In order to use a recyclable symbol on products, FTC (Federal Trade Commission)
guidelines mandate third-party independent testing. Scodix collaborated with Western
Michigan University (WMU) to implement the SBS Equivalency (WMU SBS-E) testing
protocol. This protocol is designed to model the Fiber Boxboard Association's (FBA) wax
coating replacement process.
During the testing, 16pt SBS Printkote C1S paper with a fifteen percent coverage of Scodix
embellishments was subjected to the repulping process. This involved taking the sheets
through various steps including repulping, screening, and cleaning. The goal was to ensure
that the presence of Scodix embellishments would not hinder or obstruct the recycling
process.
The outcome of the tests was positive, confirming the recyclability of sheets that have been
digitally embellished using Scodix technology. By passing the WMU SBS-E protocol, it was
demonstrated that sheets enhanced with Scodix embellishments are suitable for recycling
and can be successfully repulped during the recycling process. Brands and manufacturers
that use Scodix embellishments and adhere to this established protocol can now use the
FTC recycling symbol, provided that the substrate used is also certified as recyclable.
This accomplishment showcases Scodix's commitment to sustainability and its efforts to
create environmentally responsible solutions within the graphic arts industry. It not only
benefits Scodix as a company but also offers brands and manufacturers the opportunity to
enhance their products aesthetically while still prioritizing environmental concerns.
